Exactly five days from today on 1st June, Gawai Dayak 2007 will be celebrated all over Sarawak. In the spirit of the Dayak festival, this week I will update this blog with Gawai related postings, just to keep myself and other Dayaks who are away from home in Gawai mood.

It’s becoming a tradition that every year there will be Gawai beauty pageant contest held from kampung level to state level. This year’s Kumang (Keligit for Orang Ulu) and Keling/Keles (Belawan for Orang Ulu) Gawai 2007 was held in Miri on 6th May 2007 and hosted by Kayan Association Miri.

The winners according to sub groups were as followings:

Bidayuh category:

1. Irene Gubeng
2. Geraldine Juden
3. Rolia Bit June

Iban category:

1. Sandy Sia
2. Juliana Juwis
3. Meldellen Bangkong

Orang Ulu category:

1. Jennifer Puyang Nyurang
2. Setiati Mutang Lawai
3. Deborah Labo

Prizes for the Kumang/Keligit in each of the three sub groups were RM1,000 for first, RM800 for second and RM600 for third, apart from trophy and certificate each. Keling/Belawan (male category) took home RM700, RM600 and RM500 respectively.
