Kantoi!

“Kantoi” is a Malay urban slang which means busted or caught. Normally, it describes that someone is busted or caught (red-handedly) for doing something wrong. However, the word has been widely used as an expression in day to day conversation. For e.g.:

  • “Paper English aku kantoi lah” … I failed my English paper.
  • “Bapak aku kantoi aku hisap rokok” … My father caught me smoking.

A few weeks ago, while I was covering STM‘s concert, I met this petite pretty young lady, Shiela Ningkan from NTV7 during the media session. Call it coincidence, she’s also from Sarawak, an Iban and from the Ningkan clan. Does the late Stephen Kalong Ningkan rings a bell to you? Sarawak’s first Chief Minister.

Review of SingleTrackMind Live @ Hard Rock Cafe KL

Last Friday, team headsteadi.com was on the invitation of Reputation Mercatus to perform a media coverage on Alex Wong aka SingleTrackMind (STM) live at Hard Rock Cafe (HRC), KL.

We arrived at 9.30pm, had dinner at the cafe outside of Ruums before headed to Concorde at around 10.30pm. STM’s PR manager, Aziz Laikar was already waiting outside of HRC. After briefly introducing ourselves, Mr. Aziz ushered team headsteadi.com inside. The show started around ten past eleven and lasted for a good forty five minutes. Although Alex was recovering from a sore throat, he did not disappoint his fans who had arrived early and been waiting patiently. STM threw heck of an energetic performance and communicated relaxingly with the fans.

The showcase was to promote STM’s latest album entitled [hey.] which I’ve blogged earlier. I personally liked the song “Seventeen” where Alex wrote about moving on and getting over the loss of someone close. I was a bit disappointed though as I was expecting a local Sarawakian sape master would be accompanying the performance.

After the show, team headsteadi.com joined the rest of the media for a press conference and photo session outside HRC.

I had the chance to meet personally with Alex. What a nice and friendly lad! And knowing that we’re both from Sarawak, the topic suddenly change to food. What else would a distant Sarawakian miss most if not for the local foods back in Kuching.

Team headsteadi.com was also introduced to the rest of band members which consists of Aimi (guitar), Lucan (bass), Amir (guitar), Rosman (drums) and Kudin (keyboard).

Overall, it was a good performance, full of energy despite the sore throat and worth watching. Songs are fresh and original which carries deep and meaningful lyrics. If you wish to find out more about STM, feel free to visit singletrackmind.tv or join facebook.com and search for “singletrackmind”.

Puchong Kolo Mee suddenly became popular!

My previous posting on Puchong Kolo Mee suddenly became a hit. Within a week, friends of B.I. had had two breakfast sessions that became a mini-gathering. The second session was on Nov 8th, during the Deepavali holiday.

Like our Indian friends who grew up with roti canai, chicken curry & rice and muruku, we Dayaks grew up knowing kolo mee as our default choice from the menu when we’re out of idea of what to eat. We have kolo mee for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. It’s a meal that’s filling, available everywhere in any coffee shops, and also it’s cheap.

The most important thing, the breakfast session binds friends together into a close-knit community especially when we’re living far away from home.

Indeed friends of B.I. proved that Malaysian spirit of muhibah can exist if we really want to make it work. We have our Muslim Bidayuh and Malay friends joining us in the breakfast session indulged on their nasi lemak, bihun goreng and bihun sup in one table with us. Truly a testimony of tolerance and common understanding.
