How-to: RDP to Windows XP PC from iPod Touch

Right, so you have an iPod and a Windows PC? Ever wonder how you could connect to your XP machine from your iPod Touch via a Remote Desktop Connection (RDP)?

Step-1: Go to your iTunes Store). Yes, you heard me correctly! Malaysia is now listed in the iTunes Store to enable you to download softwares as well as update your iPod’s firmware. All you need is a valid Malaysian credit card. Unfortunately debit card is not allowed at the moment and access to the iTunes Store is only limited to software. You can’t purchase music or movies from a Malaysian account yet. There’s a workaround but I’ll talk about that some other time as that’s not the topic of our discussion.

Step-2: Type “RDP” at the search box and hit enter. Your search request wil return 2 results.

Step-3: For this purpose, let’s choose the FREE Edition i.e. “Remote Desktop lite”. Click on “Get App” and the software will be automatically downloaded to your local iTunes.

Step-4: Once completed, you’ll see the downloaded software (Figure-5) under the “Application” category in your local PC.

Step-6: Sync your iPod.

Step-7: Make sure you check the “Remote Desktop Lite” box otherwise it is not synced.

Once sync is successful, you’ll see the RDP icon on your iPod screen.

The next step is to configure RDP on your XP machine. Read this article for quick reference @ http://www.microsoft.com/windowsXp/using/mobility/getstarted/Remoteintro.mspx.

After this simple setup, you’ll be soon controlling your XP machine from your iPod Touch.

Troubleshooting:

If you ever get an error message that says “Unable to Log You on Because of an Account Restriction”, here’s the reason @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303846.

Happy trying!
