I’m appalled with the Indonesian road system! An ex-colleague of mine used to tell me that he learned to appreciate Kuala Lumpur after he visited Jakarta. At first, I laughed him off because I thought that he’s just trying to keep me happy since he’s an expat living in KL.

It took me a couple of visits to appreciate his fair comment and to understand the reality. When I came to Jakarta last year, I arrived at almost midnight. The traffic was clear and it took me about 45mins to reach my hotel at Senayan.
This time around, I flew in the first flight on Monday morning. Two hours later, I arrived in Soekarno Hatta International Airport at 10.05 a.m. local time. I boarded a taxi direct to my office and it took me two hours to steer (well the taxi driver did, not me) the traffic jam (macet in Bahasa Indonesia). I looked outside from the taxi window and was quite impress that it’s a three lane motorway. Road condition was quite good. In fact better than some part of roads in Sarawak.
It kept me wondering “So what on earth is causing the massive queue?”, until I saw the reality!
How come the Indonesian road authority can allow a kuda (horse) to roam the motorways alongside legitimate vehicles ![]()

Not enough kuda, they let loose the kijang (deer) to hog down the traffic.

When kijang roams around, it attracts the panther to trail them down from behind.

The birds too joined in the fray. The blue birds are the most found roaming on Jakarta street.

I tell you aaahhh (ahbeng accent) .. Not enough blue bird, silver bird also got …

The penguin didn’t want to be left behind and tagged along.

And the zebra decided to have some fun too.

This other pictures is supposed to read Zebra as well. I took this picture using my spy camera so picture quality was compromised.

Gotcha! Do you believe me now? I hope the Indonesian road authority would take “necessary measures” to keep these “animals” off the road ![]()
Bu Hammy # I worked in O&G Retail as a business consultant for the Asia/Pacific regions. Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Australia and New Zealand are under my territory. I go to these countries to see how they perform and whether they’re meeting their target and resources for the year. Where applicable, I’d perform audit and offer solutions in order for them to improve & achieve their target. Basically that’s what I do.
