Pygmy Hippo caught red-handed

This is now an outmoded post. I was supposed to publish this as soon as we returned from Singapore but busy schedules keeps on delaying it. Anyways, here goes …

After queuing for about 20 mins and paid SG$117 (approx. RM280) for 6 adults + 1 child, we entered Singapore Zoo with high expectation to find out whether the it really makes up to all its accolades and acclaims.

The entry and exit are actually at the same point. That means you’re going to explore the zoo in a big circle. As you enter the gate, you’re greeted by the souvenir shop.

So what do I think of Singapore Zoo?

To be honest, it is spectacular! The zoo is landscaped to be as natural as possible. That means most of the animal enclosures were made to be as close as possible to its natural habitat. Big old trees are well preserved making the zoo look like a rainforest besides providing shed on the walkways.

The fauna collections are quite comprehensive as well. Here’s some of the creatures that caught my attention.

Tame parrots ready to pose for the camera alongside the visitors.

This mistaken identity pig or babirusa! Is it a babi or a rusa?

The white tigers that took Nordin Montong‘s life.

The real wild hogs. Not the Hollywood version.

We “time-travelled” to the “Australian Outback” for a while to feed the Kangaroo.

Be amazed to be greeted by emu at the “Australian Outback”.

From Australia, we “teleported” to Ethiopia, Africa to see the Hamadryas Baboons in action. The stinky scent of the baboons can be tracked from as far as 50 meters.

Included in the Primate Kingdom are the spider monkeys.

Not forgetting the cheeky orang-utan that’s keeping zoo patrons fascinated.

The fastest mammal in the world, the cheetah.

You do not want to get in the way of these humongous rhinoceroses. When all four of them run, you could feel the ground was vibrating.

And, there was this loving Pygmy Hippo “couple” caught  red-handed in hanky-panky action :))

As a conclusion, Singapore Zoo is worth to visit. To get there from Johor Bahru takes about 10 mins drive (minus the time dealing at the  immigration, of course). headsteadi.com recommends Singapore Zoo as a weekend getaway ;)

  1. Thanks Hammy # Yes, the lady in orange is hot. If not I won’t have marry her :P

Yep, once in a while tukar angin by visiting SG is great. After all, only 3.5 hours drive from KL.

  2. Pak Deejay # I was there for 2 nights. I rented two rooms for 6 adults and 1 child. We drove in a 7-seater. 1 car means we have already saved on petrol & toll. We stayed at Regin Hotel (http://headsteadi.com/2008/12/14/budget-hotel-review-regin-hotel-singapore/).

Hotel is quite expensive so another alternative would be stay in JB and commute everyday into SG. Both decisions come with pros and cons.

    Stay in Singapore:
    Pros:
    - save time of not going through the hassle and long Q at the immigration
    - save petrol and toll money in/out MY <> SG

    Cons:
    - hotels are expensive (try book early and via online for a cheaper rate)

    Stay in JB:
    Pros:
    - save expenses on hotel and food

    Cons:
    - a lot of your time will be wasted at the immi and on the journey

    Conclusion:
For short visit, stay in SG is a better option. For longer visit, stay in JB is more economical.

  3. Great stuff…..its going to be an option for my 2009 Calender. You made a day trip? Wondering what’s the best hotel there for economic travellers like us :)

  4. Thanks for the nice pics and great info.Singapore is listed in my travelling plans now. That lady in orange looks hot hehe..
