Why I’m not a Big Fan of Valentine’s Day

I’m not a big fan of Valentine’s Day. I just think that Valentine’s Day is getting too much hype and marketing fluff to give retailers a week’s more profit and an increased of sales revenue in February since it is the shortest month of the year. Exactly how the true Christmas spirit was butchered by these marketing people. Damn you marketing people!

So, why am I not a big fan of Valentine’s?

Everyday is Valentine’s Day – I don’t need a special day to tell my wife that I love her and that she’s special to me. Everyday is Valentine’s Day to us for the past 9 years.

The hearts are being forced! – It is even more romantic to give flowers/gifts on every other normal days than having to give it on Feb 14th just because it’s Valentine’s and everybody else did. Damn you marketing people! I’m lucky my wife doesn’t dig flowers.

A day of rip-offs – Malls are packed with shoppers doing last minute Valentine’s gift shopping. These retailers are taking advantage of us, the poor customers by all sorts of “2-in-1″ promotions. Damn you marketing people!

Dinner date trick or treats? – Restaurants will be fully booked. Hotels and resorts will also be fully occupied. F&B proprietors will come up with all sorts of meal promotions romantically named such as   “Lover’s Delight”, “Sweetheart Special” etc for an “unbeatable price” offer where in actual fact the beef steak used is of mediocre quality or the air-flown salmon is nearing expiration. No wonder they are cheap! Damn you marketing people. I don’t need to wait for Valentine’s to enjoy fine-dining. I can enjoy that every week or whenever the Mrs demands.

Discrimination to the singles & heart-broken souls – Come on people. How about those lonely singles and heart-broken souls? Lend them a shoulder to cry on please. During this time commercial ads portray them as losers! Damn you marketing people!

Save the planet! – Valentine’s card are made of trees! Thousands of acres of roses, tulips and damn only you marketing people know what other flowers are romantic for Valentine’s are reaped each year while Mother Earth is being ripped.

Interrupted work - People find an excuse to leave office early to beat the traffic jam in order to secure their booking at the restaurant before it’s given away to walk-in guests. Damn you marketing people!

Hmmm … what’s my plan for Valentine’s this year?

  1. Probably lunch or early dinner with the Mrs. Something different from the routine.
  2. Soft launch of my “project” in conjunction of Valentine’s Day at 6pm. Top secret for now!.

Damn you marketing people! You made me one of you.

  4. *Looks to the left* Looks to the right* ok, my wife’s not around to see me say (looks at the watch 1 a.m) ~ I too am no Valentine fan…but luckily the craze is only in big towns like Kuching, Miri, Sibu & Bintulu….so to have a really good Valentine dinner minus the inflated rate, I guess one is fortunate in Sarawak…boleh pergi Bau & Serian :)

  5. I sooo agree with you on points 1-7, or all. :-) Stay at home, do home-cook and home entertainment is so much better. But I’m dying to know… eh, what’s the top secret? Dare i hope u will spill all in the next entry?

  6. Not celebrating Valentine’s Day with your loved one doesn’t make you less romantic kan? To me its a matter of personal choice so the marketing people are just capitalizing on it to earn extra to support a living. You and Caroline sounds like a perfect couple so that should make you secure enough.I never celebrated Valentine’s Day with anyone in my life but still survived until today hehe..:D So happy launching of your’project’soon and be extra careful and gentle okay ! :))

  7. Haha..nice points. The other day you asked me what plan do I have for Valentine’s Day in one of my blog posts. I haven’t answer you, so let me answer you here. I haven’t really plan yet. I know what to buy for Orange.

I have to work till 7pm on Valentine’s Day. And I have curfew, before 11.30pm if I haven’t reach home, Dad will scold. Means I don’t even have much time for me to celebrate. Probably went to have dinner.
