William’s Mamak

17 February 2009 1,798 views 10 Comments

On Friday night, we went out to see some friends. This time around, we skipped our usual spot at Asia Cafe and opted for William’s Mamak at Taman Mayang, Kelana Jaya. It is a warung concept, or an open air hawker stall kind of makan (dining) place infested with cockroaches and fat rodents wandering freely on the street ignoring the patrons who mostly prefer to sit by the roadside tables instead of inside the premise.

If you’re a first timer, do not expect that you’ll be served with a menu. The fun way to order is by asking them what they have. They’ll ask you back what do you want to eat, then they’ll give you suggestions. If you’re still in doubts, the warung helpers will call the proprietor, Mr William. He’s a friendly chap who knows what he’s talking about. William will ask you what would you like to have i.e. whether you want a pasta, meat, burger or rice and he’ll personally recommend what type of dishes you should try just by looking at your puzzled face. I’d say it’s a cool talent that he has.

For example, when my friend said he was undecided what pasta that he’d like to order, William suggested him to try Chicken Mushroom with Roasted Duck and Mozarella spaghetti. It came out perfecto and taste like heaven sent pasta!

Then he looked at Carol and suggested that she should try Sweet and Sour Seafood Arabiatta Spaghetti.

For our other friend William offered Olive and Garlic Seafood Spaghetti. William’s spaghetti’s are fusionised with cili padi that gives them the extra ooomph!

I ordered lamb chop, which I think is the best among all four. I suspect it was prepared by grilling 3 slices of lamb shoulder then served with lamb shank stew and  jacket potato. The lamb shank sauce is absolutely amazing. Sinfully delicious.

As for drinks, we ordered their signature Ribena Lychee although I thought that’s not really Ribena but grape flavour purple colouring. It’s totally refreshing!

I must also warn you that the portion of one dish is enough to feed two persons so if you’re not a big eater, my recommendation would be to order one dish and share it. If not enough, you can always order for more. Having said that, we made a mistake by ordering four center dishes. We had to pack home the balance in the end :) Total damage was RM170.

How to get there?

If you’re from Sunway or Federal Highway, get on the LDP heading towards Kelana Jaya/Damansara. Drive ahead until you see the Kelana Jaya LRT station on your right. Slow down and keep left. You will pass by a bus stop. Filter left at the next junction after this bus stop. That is Jalan SS24/1. Go straight, at lights filter left onto Jalan SS26/2. You will notice Plaza Mayang on your right. Slow down as you don’t want to miss Jalan 26/9 which is on your right. Filter right onto this road. You will notice 7-eleven. That means you’re still not lost :) You will also notice warung-warung (hawker stalls) on your left. Drive down further. William’s is the last few rows of the warungs. Just to make sure you’re at the correct warung, you should notice a hair saloon opposite, on the right side. You won’t miss William’s as you’ll see lots of people sitting outside patronizing the premise.

That Ribena Lychee looks so purple, so tempting. Lately you’re on a food rampage, is it? hahaha. Food tastes like heaven, place look like hell. Who cares, asal nyaman.

One Other # If you follow this blog from the beginning, it has always been about F&B and Travel & Adventures being my main topics. Btw, food is great albeit the dirty place. The price is too expensive for a hawker stall. Like you said, asal nyaman

RW # Yes. The place is dirty. Even when we asked for empty plates, the plates were still wet with food stains all over the plates. Roaches and rodents wander around so freely.

The food above looks delicious enough but then I think I would still prefer and place emphasis on cleanliness and hygienic practices as to where the food is prepared, cooked and served. But then again its all a matter of personal choice.
