With H1N1 pandemic not getting any better, my workplace had been taking additional measures to keep the virus spread at bay. Yesterday, the facilities department installed hand sanitisers at the elevator forecourt on every floors as a proactive precautions.

I’ve been keeping wet wipes and hand sanitisers on my desk for quick cleaning too. My desk, keyboard and mouse are regularly sanitised. Sometimes after shaking too many hands in a day (my office gets visitors regularly), the hand sanitiser comes really handy.

When I fly for my business visits, I see quite a few travellers who adorned the mask but majority are ignoring it including myself. It’s not comfortable wearing one. When you breathe, you inhaled back the same hot air that you just let out. I tend to agree with sixthseal’s view that wearing the surgical masks will not solve the problem. Here’s what I do as my measures (Disclaimer: this is my own practice and not endorsed by medical experts):

1. Avoid touching my face i.e. nose and mouth especially when in public area. You don’t know what you’ve been touching before e.g. handrails, door knobs, shaking hands etc.
2. Wash my hands regularly with soap and water. Alternatively, I carry with me wet wipes or hand sanitizers when I’m mobile.
3. Before I fly and whenever I feel that I’m going to get flu/fever I take paracetamol tablets. My preference is Panadol Actifast as it is easy on the stomach. How do I tell I’m going to get fever or flu? Well, I’ve mild tonsillitis so each time I feel my tonsil is swolen or sore, I know that I’m going to fall ill anytime soon.
4. When I return home from my business trip, I made sure that I shower first before I come into contact with Lugas.
5. When at home, I practise drinking warm water with fresh squeezed lemon juice, first thing in the morning and before I go to bed.
6. Drink plenty of water during the day.

So far, I’ve been in good health doing these practice. Touch wood!

Last weekend, we went to Ikea’s last day sale. The crowd were too big so while Carol did the shopping, I took Lugas to areas/corners where there are less people. I can’t help but noticing some parents were wearing mask while their babies (about Lugas’ age) were exposed. Are they selfish? How about us? Are we selfish too? One thing for sure, Lugas will have less outing after this except for the evening walk outside the house by the swimming pool, attending church mass and seeing the doctor for monthly check-ups.

Award-winning film director Yasmin Ahmad (pic) has died from massive bleeding in the brain at the Damansara Specialist Hospital. She died at 11.25pm on Saturday. She had undergone surgery following her collapse at the TV3 headquarters Seri Pentas on Thursday.

News of her death had been pouring over the media including the internet so there’s no need for me to elaborate. What I wanted to share was my brief encounter with Yasmin when I bumped into her on my AirAsia flight from Kuching to KL back in May this year.

Being a celebrity she could’ve just ignored me but such a humble person she was, she greeted me while walking down the aisle towards her seat at the tail end of the aircraft.

Yasmin: “Dah makan?”

Me: “Belum. Tunggu sampai KL”

Yasmin: “I nak makan. Lapar! Nasi ayam dia sedap”. She smiled, promoting AirAsia’s chicken rice set.

Me: “Really? I’ll give it a try next time”.

Yasmin: “Ok, have a nice day”.

Me: “You too ..”

The following week, when I flew back to Kuching from KL, I tried the chicken rice as she had recommended. Not bad at all. That was our five seconds chat but her friendly and down to earth nature had struck me. The nation had lost a gem. She was a prolific director. One of a kind. May she rest in peace.

Was on the way to work this morning when I heard the news onthe radio that Michael Jackson is dead early this morning. He was 50.
